Benson was founded in 1886 with the development of the railroad in Johnston County. Merchants quickly opened for business around the railroad bringing turpentine and dry goods to be shipped. Today, Benson is the hub of another major transportation system, I-95 and I-40 bringing visitors to this charming community.
Visitors to Benson will enjoy learning more about the area's history at the Benson Museum of Local History, located along Main Street, just minutes from Exit 79 off I-95.
Benson is home to two festivals rich in local heritage -- the State Singing Convention held in June and Benson Mule Days held in September.
